Measure circumference with paper

Steps

You need: a paper strip (about 5 mm wide), a ruler marked in millimetres, and a pen.

  1. Mark the circumference

Wrap the paper strip snugly around the base of your finger where the ring will sit. Mark exactly where the paper overlaps with a thin, precise line.

  2. Measure the length

Lay the paper strip completely flat on a table. Use the ruler to measure the distance from the start of the paper to your mark in millimetres.

  3. Find your size

The number of millimetres you measured in step 2 is your exact ring size. If you measured 54 mm on the ruler, for example, your size is 54 on the EU scale.

  4. Check accuracy

Repeat the process 2–3 times to make sure the measurement is accurate. Use the average of your measurements for the best fit.

How to use the ring gauge

The ring gauge is made from a flexible material for the best possible fit. It follows the finger's shape and makes it easy to find the right size at home.

  • Thread the narrow end through the buckle so the band forms a loop. Place the ring gauge on the finger you want to measure.
  • Tighten until the band feels comfortable. It should be snug enough that it does not slide off, yet loose enough to pass over the knuckle. Ideally measure when your hands are at normal room temperature.
  • Read your EU size at the arrow on the buckle. The scale follows inner circumference in millimetres, and the number you see is the size you give when you order.

Measure a ring you already own

Find a ring that fits perfectly on the finger in question, a ruler marked in millimetres, and follow the steps below.

  1. Place the ring

Lay the ring flat on a stable, well-lit surface.

  2. Measure the empty space

Centre the ruler over the ring. Measure the longest distance straight across the middle from inside edge to inside edge. It is essential that you measure only the empty space inside the band, not the metal itself. This number is the ring's inner diameter in millimetres.

  3. Consider ring width

Take the design of the ring you are buying into account. Wide bands (over 4–5 mm) feel tighter on the finger, so it is common to go up half or a full size compared with what you measure on a slim ring.
